Lawrence High traveled across town to take on Free State High School in the City Showdown. Lawrence was able to knock down 11 three-pointers to take down Free State in a 56–40 victory Friday, Feb. 19, 2021 at Free State High School.

In this game and in recents leading up to this game I feel like I have been in a groove. I think that I have been fresh and have been excited to photograph. Notable things I think have been strong points for me are as such: I think I have been doing better about adding depth to my photographs. I am really happy with my ability to find angles and find foreground and background to add to my photographs.

I think I have done a really good job at not staying in the same spot. Previously I have covered KU basketball where we are given specific spots to shoot from. As a young photographer I think I allowed that to make me assume that was the way to shoot. We are in one of the highest levels of sports shooting alongside photographers who have been making images longer than I have been alive. I was under the assumption that this was just the best way to shoot basketball and shoot sports.

Previously, I have thought maybe if I stay in the same spot long enough, the photo I am looking for will come to me. I have started to discover the opposite. I find the more I move around the more often I get new and intriguing photographs that I am excited about. A lot of times I think I am close to getting what I want but then I waste game time and photographs on the same exact images I wasn’t happy with before. Moving around allows me to discover new angles that work. I now notice if I am not getting the photo I want, it is better for me to get up and try a different spot. It is more likely the spot I was previously in just wasn’t working for me at the time. Now it’s time to explore.
